Toronto, August 2nd, 2017—The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers welcomes the announcement by International Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne that of the additional European cheeses coming into Canada under the terms of the Canada-EU trade deal, 50% will be allocated to retailers and distributors.
Gary Sands, Senior Vice President of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers and Chair of Canada’s Small Business Matters Coalition, said “We want to applaud Minister Champagne for ensuring that 30 percent of that allocation will be directed to SME’s, which recognizes some of the systemic challenges small business grocers and distributors have in a highly concentrated market where large chains dominate the industry.” Within that context, Sands added that “fair access to cheese quota for Canada’s small business grocers has always been an issue. This is a very big step towards correcting that imbalance in the market.”
“The continued priority this government attaches to small business, particularly under the leadership of Small Business Minister Bardish Chagger, has been very encouraging as we work together to turn challenges into opportunities” Sands stated.
Canada’s independent grocers represent just over $11.5 billion in sales and number approximately 6900 stores across the country.
