Whole Foods is being investigated by the New York City’s Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) for “systemic overcharging for pre-packaged foods,” says a report.
The Washington Report quoted DCA Commissioner Julie Menin saying, “Our inspectors tell me this is the worst case of mislabeling they have seen in their careers, which DCA and New Yorkers will not tolerate.”
The health food chain has been found to be overcharging customers by overstating the weight of prepackaged meat, dairy and baked goods. The DCA tested 80 different types of prepackaged products and found mislabelled weights for each.
In a statement, Whole Foods said, “We disagree with the DCA’s overreaching allegations.”
Last year, Whole Foods paid $800,000 in penalties following an investigation into alleged pricing irregularities in California.
