Independent grocers in Toronto are looking to stay open on statutory holidays following a court ruling.
A report in the Toronto Star said that retailers want to ensure that the city will stop issuing tickets that open on holidays, such as Labour Day.
Gary Sands, the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers’ vice president of policy, told the Star the “way we’re reading (the ruling), any food retailer/supermarket in Toronto can be open on a statutory holiday.”
In the fall, the Ontario Court of Justice ruled that Longo’s successfully argued it met the definition of a business that sells “prepared food”–just as restaurants and fast-food operators, therefore it was exempt from the requirement to close.
The city lost an appeal earlier this summer.
