I want to thank you for our discussion today, in particular on DFC’s concerns as they relate to the lack of clarity from government on the importance of securing an uninterrupted supply of dairy products for Canadians as part of its Action Plan for Critical Infrastructure to address the consequences of the COVID-19.
Recognizing dairy, as a pillar of agriculture, under “critical infrastructure” would, amongst other things signal the special responsibilities incumbent upon the sector’s workforce. That designation would also help in expediting any needed policy and regulatory changes where shortages of labour, inspectors and other critical needs may loom. We note that earlier today, the United States Department of Homeland Security deemed agriculture as ‘critical infrastructure’ amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
I want to assure you that, in this time of crisis, dairy farmers from coast to coast are working hard to meet the requirements of the market. In fact, the whole dairy industry, farmers, transporters and processors are working together to ensure consumers get an uninterrupted access to dairy products.
As ensuring a steady supply of consumer goods is important to your membership, we ask for your support in your representations to government to have dairy designated as an “essential industry”.
