The University of Guelph Food Price Report 2016 reports a 2% to 4% increase on food prices.
- Meats – 2.5% to 4.5%
- Fish and seafood – 1% to 3%
- Dairy and eggs – 0% to 2%
- Grains – 0% to 2%
- Fruits and nuts –2.5% to 4.5%
- Vegetables – 2% to 4%
- Food from restaurants – 1.5% to 3.5%
Sylvain Charlebois, the lead author of the report, said in the Globe and Mail that in 2015 the sudden currency drop caused the price of fruits, vegetables, and nuts to go up 10%.
The report, published by the University of Guelph’s Food Institute pointed to factors such as the effects of El Niño on climate and food-growing weather, the weak Canadian dollar, and predicted consumer trends for the new year.
