MAY 9, 2019 – From time to time, as stakeholders in the agri-food industry know, the issue of Animal Care and handling is raised by special animal welfare interest groups. Retail grocers, being the ‘face of the industry’ to consumers, know this all too well. Over the last few years, we have witnessed special animal rights campaigns launched with Caged Chickens, Turkeys, Broiler Chickens and just this month, some groups called for a boycott of grocers selling rabbit. Next year there will likely be a new target.
The position of CFIG with respect to the issue of the care and handling of all farm animals and poultry, is that we support the national regulatory process that governs animal care requirements and recommended practices through the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC). As a national association, we support the national process for establishing sound practices based on collaboration, science and facts, under the auspices of the Government of Canada.
