For the third year in a row, there is an issue with respect to Romaine Lettuce from the United States. However, at least this year there has been a clear identification at a relatively early stage, of the growing area of the Romaine lettuce linked to an outbreak of E.coli 0157:H7. As the attached updates from the CFIA for industry and from the Public Health Agency of Canada indicate, all information points to the Salinas growing region of California as the source. Romaine lettuce from all other areas has been deemed safe.
CFIG is participating in regular industry discussions and updates with both the CFIA and PHAC, and any further relevant information will be posted on our website (www.cfig.ca) for members. We would recommend you check the site daily. Retailers should also ensure that their suppliers are providing attestation or certificate of origin for any Romaine lettuce they are supplying.
In the meantime, members may wish to consider developing their own in-store signage to assure your customers that the Romaine lettuce you are selling, is safe for consumption. Something along the following lines, but adapt as you feel appropriate:
Romaine lettuce from the Salinas growing area of California has been subjected to a recall. Regulatory bodies in both Canada and the United States have deemed Romaine lettuce from all other areas of the United States as being safe to eat. We have ensured that all Romaine lettuce from Salinas has been removed from our store(s).
