Today, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, announced the proposed Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations. The proposed Regulations would prohibit the manufacture, import and sale of six categories of single-use plastic items (checkout bags, cutlery, foodservice ware made from or containing problematic plastics, ring carriers, stir sticks, and straws), with certain exceptions for straws.
The official version of the proposed Regulations will be published in the Canada Gazette, Part I on December 25th, 2021 initiating a 70-day public comment period ending on March 5th, 2022. In the meantime, a pre-publication version of the proposed Regulations is available on the CEPA Registry website.
